For our first night out in Gay Mexico City, we always begin our trip at Tom’s Leather Bar. If you’ve been to an Eagle, it’s a similar vibe although we spot the crowd a bit more button down than fetish gear in Mexico City. The atmosphere feels like a gothic church turned gay club, and the entrance fee of pesos each or about $16 USD comes with beers depending on your arrival time. We also affection the little napkins the bartenders wrap around your beer. In addition, cover includes live amusement by maybe a half dozen dancers on three bars throughout the night. Dispatches From the Road: Getting Sloppy at Toms Leather Bar and la Esquina del Chilaquil

My last night in the DF and, like so many mornings in this town, my eyes open to a criminal hangover. This cruda is beyond, and, suddenly, the cantina hopping and hanging in Toms Leather Bar until 4 am seem less legitimate without the strength of Ron Bacardi’s fortified reserve.

A see here without at least one day devoted to each of these would hardly be one at all. Cantinas are vestiges of classic Mexican social life that, sadly, are in peril of disappearance. Aside from older generations and oddball hangers on, they simply aren’t as popular as mescalerias, regular bars, or even pulquerias for that matter. But more on that in another post.

Likewise, with Toms. Although in no menace of going anywhere, this sleazy mainstay (it just turned 20) remains a standard from my neonate queer days sliding from one bed to another in Granted, it’s not for everyone….literally. Not unlike other bars of its ilk, it had maintained a sort of unspok

Everything is fair game here: drinks, fun, hookups, porn, and even sex. The reason? You absolutely must traverse their eminent “dark room” to get to the bathroom. There’s no other way. So, let that assist as a warning (or an incentive) that you will end up in the “dark room” at some gesture or another during your time here.

It’s located through a non-assuming door on Insurgentes Avenue, just before Michoacan highway. For many, this spot is well-known but, for the younger crowd (24 and under), it might look love a northern Mexican cantina because of the double doors at the entrance.

Tom’s has already cemented its classic status and it’s not been easy to replicate it anywhere else; neither it’s vibe or the grabassery that goes on in here. It’s the only one of its kind to live the late 90s as a pioneer of the plan that men could be daring and exhibitionists while dancing and hanging out.
