We covered the first two volumes in June , the third and fourth entries in June , and here we are again with the fifth and closing number for Identity festival Beginning as an endearing but formulaic collection of concise strips, I Ponder Our Son is Gay has evolved in its five volumes as overarching story arcs and character development moved ever further to the frontline in place of its original, semi-punchline led set-up.
That original premise played with the idea that Tomoko, the mother of the book’s emphasis character Hiroki Aoyama, had come to suspect her schoolboy son was queer but not yet confident to show up out. It's mainly told from the point of view of the open-minded mom Tomoko, but the emphasis is on the eldest son Hiroki and his (terrible) attempts at hiding his sexuality. The family also includes the younger brother Yuri, who's still but notices more than he lets on; and the father Akiyoshi, who tries to do as much quality parenting as he can when he's not away on business.
