We compared the biggest U.S. cities based on 20 indicators of an ideal LGBTQ city, such as anti-discrimination policies, the share of same-sex households, and LGBTQ support resources.
We also factored in affordability, LGBTQ-friendly health care access, and Pride-readiness.

My love of road trips started early. As a teenager growing up in a suburb of Boston, I discovered Jack Kerouacs classic road trip novel On the Road. The book opened a door to queer history and to places where offbeat weirdos like me could find their fit.
I wrote my college thesis on road trips, and driving myself to (and from) a summer semester at UC Berkeley as research. I guess I should have known support then that I would end up writing about travel for a living!
Ive taken two cross-country road trips – one during college, and one when I moved to California.
Ive also taken shorter road trips: Novel York to Florida, Novel York to Atlanta by way of Kentucky (state #44) and Tennessee, and New York to Michigan (state #43).
I spent a month living in a ghost town in Alaska for a writers retreat, and stayed on for an extra two weeks to explore the state with my boyfriend, who flew out to Juneau to meet me.
Closer to home, I loving taking weekend trips to cities and towns in the Hudson Valley, where I live.

Obergefell v. Hodges is a civil rights case in which the Supreme Court governed that the fundamental right to unite is guaranteed to same-sex couples. Decided on June 26, , Obergefell v. Hodges required all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and US territories to issue marriage licenses to lgbtq+ couples and realize the marriages of same-sex couples on the same terms and conditions as opposite-sex marriages.
LGBTQ-Friendly Cities
While all 50 states are required to recognize gay marriages, some states and cities are more LGBTQ friendly and have higher populations of gay couples. Portland, Oregon, for example, is one of the most LGBTQ-friendly cities in the US. Portland was the first major city to elect an openly gay man as mayor in and mandated most common restrooms to be gender-neutral in Salt Lake City, Utah has two lgbtq+ city councilors, a lesbian mayor and a pride festival of more than 40, participants every year.
