In some people’s minds, being homosexual is as much outside one’s control as the tint of your skin and your height. On the other hand, the Bible clearly and consistently declares that homosexual activity is a sin (Genesis –13; Leviticus ; ; Romans –27; 1 Corinthians ; 1 Timothy ). God created marriage and sexual relationships to be between one man and one woman: “At the inception the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man will quit his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’” (Matthew –5). Anything outside of God’s intent and design is sin. The Bible teaches that Christians are to exist for God, deny themselves, pick up their cross, and follow Him (Matthew ), including with their sexuality. This disconnect between what the Bible says and what some people feel leads to much controversy, debate, and even hostility.

Some Christians respond to this argument with what seems to be the only alternative: by saying that those who identify as lgbtq+ choose to be lgbtq+. This response is usually met with so much derision—“With all the homophobia in the world, who would choose to be gay??”. . . “Did you choose to be straight??&#;—that it’s seldom helpful.
In one sense, of course, it’s true. If by gay you mean “a person who engages in homosexual behavior,” then God doesn’t make someone homosexual any more than he makes someone an adulterer, a fornicator, or a man who has relations with just his wife. God doesn’t make people engage in any sexual behaviors. We freely decide all our moral actions—that’s why we can be held accountable for them.
But when most people tell, “God made me gay,” they’re talking about attractions (which they consider part of a God-given identity) rather than behaviors. Although, this implies that they’re also talking about whether it’s okay to act upon those desires, since it seems self-evident to most people that we can act according to how we’re made.

You possess been part of a research team that is looking for to understand how the decision was made to position the word lgbtq+ in the bible. Is that true?
Ed: Yes. It first showed up in the RSV translation. So before figuring out why they decided to use that word in the RSV translation (which is outlined in my upcoming publication with Kathy Baldock, Forging a Consecrated Weapon: How the Bible Became Anti-Gay) I wanted to see how other cultures and translations treated the matching verses when they were translated during the Reformation years ago. What is a biblical response to the notion that people are born gay?
That’s a difficult doubt and a lot of it depends on what we denote by that phrase. So, let’s take the person who says, “I was born gay,” and they mean they have some genetic causation for their attraction to people of the equal sex. I would say we can look at the latest scientific literature, which does not strongly support that conclusion. In fact, the official language from the leading psychiatric or psychological associations will say that we don’t yet know of a definitive causation and that it’s probably some mix of essence and nurture. So any reports about a so-called “gay gene” are greatly exaggerated. So that’s one thing we could say.
We could also press a minute further and say, “Well, perhaps there are issues of attraction in the brain or there are things hard-wired in us that would make people more predisposed to being attracted to people of the same sex.” But even that doesn’t confirm as much as we might think, because we’ve seen studies that suggest that people contain a predisposition to alcoholism.
